BUSINESS NEWS

  • Portland's Ocotillo restaurant won Yankee magazine’s Best New Brunch award while Maine’s Backriver Blends in Topsham and Brunswick’s Skordo were recognized for new artisan foods—awards announced in late October and featured in Yankee’s Nov/Dec issue.  Portland Press Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • Historical photos reveal how Portland’s coffee culture has grown over the years—images include a 1955 shot of a waitress operating an automatic percolator and later depictions of bustling downtown coffee shops from the 1980s to 2005. The collection shows that the city has long offered diverse ways to enjoy coffee.  Portland Press Herald
  • Portland and nearby Maine venues host five events this week— a musical production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at The Hill Arts with multiple showtimes starting Friday, a hip-hop dance show by Rennie Harris Puremovement in Westbrook on Saturday at 7 p.m., a play about EMS responders in West Bath on Saturday and Sunday, Laraaji’s ambient concert celebrating his Day of Radiance at First Parish Church on Saturday at 8 p.m., and an indie-folk concert by The Lone Bellow at State Theatre on Saturday at 8 p.m.  Portland Press Herald
  • American Idol winner Abi Carter will perform in Portland on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Portland House of Music, 25 Temple St.—fellow contestant Julia Gagnon will open the show.  Portland Press Herald
  • Thomas Barthelmes, chef and co-owner of Finestkind in Saco, won the judges’ award at the Maine Lobster Chef of the Year competition for his lobster custard dish — his event took place during Harvest on the Harbor on Oct. 31. A team from Southern Maine Community College’s Culinary Arts program also won the People’s Choice Award with a Madagascar vanilla butter-poached lobster dish.  Portland Press Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers and students from the University of New England in Biddeford deployed a buoy between Ram and Eagle Island in Saco Bay in front of Camp Ellis at 9 a.m. Monday to measure wave height, water levels, wind and water temperatures—data used to assess coastal protection after recent devastating storms.  FOX23
  • Marine Mammals of Maine, a Brunswick nonprofit, responded to over 300 stranded animals in 2025 — the only certified center that cares for seals, dolphins, whales and sea turtles along the coast. Executive director Lynda Doughty said the small team of staff and volunteers helped rescue and treat the animals for return to the wild.  WMTW

FINANCE NEWS

  • Local and national banks are offering help to federal workers losing pay due to the government shutdown. The Finance Authority of Maine announced the Government Shutdown Loan Guarantee Program—banks also are providing fee waivers, crisis loans, and support for food pantries as many face SNAP interruptions.  Portland Press Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Yes on 1 campaign says Maine should require a photo ID for in-person voting—and change rules for absentee ballots and drop boxes—to boost election security; Alex Titcomb of Dinner Table Action called the plan commonsense while Gov. Mills warned it could threaten voter rights.  WGME

HEALTH NEWS

  • Negotiations continue today between Northern Light and Anthem after the deal for non-hospital care ended Oct. 31, leaving Anthem patients out-of-network from Nov. 1—Northern Light said its patients will be treated as in-network during talks. Anthem has offered an extension if Northern Light agrees, and the hospital contract will end on Dec. 31—officials expect more news later today.  Portland Press Herald
