- ➤ Portland poet Jenn Carter shared her new poem 'River Otters' this week via Deep Water: Maine Poems in a project with the Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance. The poem shows how otters are like water and people and asks writers from different backgrounds to send in their work by the end of the year. Portland Press Herald

EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Makili Matty, a Colby College freshman, recovered his handmade surfboard after it fell off his car at Higgins Beach—his mother's Facebook post connected him with the man who found it. He said the board, crafted for his Traip Academy capstone project, holds special sentimental value and he plans to create more in the future. FOX23
- ➤ South Portland voters approved a plan to install a natural grass field for the high school athletic complex (54%-46% vote) while rejecting an artificial turf option (73%-23% vote). District officials said the update will fix uneven fields and high maintenance costs and work will start soon. WGME
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Voters in Yarmouth approved a $7.5M upgrade to the sewage pump station—this project aims to prevent overflow into the Royal River due to capacity limits. Town officials said the bond will not raise property taxes for the next fiscal year—making the upgrade a necessary investment. FOX23
- ➤ After four years of work, Maine DOT has largely finished replacing the I-295 bridges near Exit 17 in Yarmouth, repaving Route 1 and extending the Beth Condon Memorial Pathway — final tasks such as reinstalling signs, electrical work and adding flashing pedestrian lights will be completed by Dec. 1. The $27.6 million federal-funded project will ease traffic and improve safety for pedestrians during busy travel times. Portland Press Herald
- ➤ MaineHousing has temporarily reallocated $2.2 million from other programs to cover LIHEAP heating aid for about 3,900 households that applied in August and September while federal funds remain delayed due to the shutdown. Payments will be sent directly to fuel vendors over the next few weeks and will be repaid once federal funding is released. Portland Press Herald
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Maine has put new legislation in effect to improve doctor training on menopause care—after an AARP report showed 80% of new internal medicine residents felt unprepared. Sponsored by former state Rep. Kristen Cloutier—who said the bill will form a work group to develop educational materials so women can better understand and discuss their symptoms—officials hope to fill a critical gap in medical training. - ➤ Ollie Wright scored the only goal for Portland Hearts of Pine in a USL League One playoff win against Chattanooga Red Wolves last Saturday and honored his late friend Ryan ‘Beano’ Lynch with a personal message.
