- ➤ Westbrook will host a free Thanksgiving meal at FBC Westbrook on Nov.15 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. and a weekly community meal at Westbrook Community Center on Nov.19 from 5 to 6 p.m.—Portland will distribute a Thanksgiving dinner to go at Stroudwater Food Pantry on Nov.25 from 1 to 3 p.m. while Gorham will offer a free takeout meal and a dinner at Summit Community Church on Nov.27 with dinner registration closing Nov.20. - ➤ Gorham Sand & Gravel will donate 10 fresh turkeys & 10 hams on Nov 26 for families to pick up in Buxton from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. while Westbrook & Gorham high school students will meet the Rotary Club on Nov 18 at Westbrook Regional Vocational Center with lunch at 11:30 a.m. The Mission of Hope Clothes Closet will offer free clothes on Nov 15 at Cressey Road Christian Church, Baxter Memorial Library’s repair fair added 495 pounds of groceries to the food pantry, a parking ban is in effect until May 1, Public Works will begin winter hours on Dec 1 from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., & the community recalls the 60th anniversary of Gorham Camp Fire Girls reported on Nov 12, 1975. - ➤ Mainely Wishes has raised funds and is set to grant life-changing wishes to people facing medical challenges, veterans, and families in hardship—nominations will be accepted for those who qualify. FOX23
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston will end its trauma center designation on Dec 1 — it will be reclassified as a trauma system hospital. Only Maine Medical Center in Portland and Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor will continue as trauma centers. FOX23
- ➤ Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston will no longer seek trauma center verification as of Dec. 1—leaving Maine with only two verified trauma centers, Maine Medical Center in Portland and Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. The hospital will remain a trauma system hospital and will transfer patients following EMS guidelines when necessary. WMTW
- ➤ A Hannaford dietitian in Scarborough, Alison Stowell, presented kitchen shortcuts during the Heart Health 8 series—she advised using pre-washed lettuces and microwaveable vegetables to ease holiday stress—reminding shoppers to take ten minutes a day to breathe and balance their meals. WMTW
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ High school teams across the state won championships in sports such as soccer and field hockey this week. Cheverus, Scarborough, Belfast and others celebrated wins on Saturday and today—each team received a trophy to mark its victory. Portland Press Herald
- ➤ Westbrook High School football team will clash with Kennebunk in the Class B South championship game on Friday, Nov 14 at 6 p.m. at Olmstead Field after a 15-12 semifinal win over Marshwood — Westbrook police said parking will be limited on Vocational Drive and fans should arrive early; the marching band and color guard also earned top honors at the recent New England Scholastic Band Association championships. - ➤ The University of Maine women’s soccer team will play Central Florida on Friday at 7 p.m. in Orlando after winning the America East championship and seeking its first NCAA win, while Bates field hockey earned a first-round bye in the Division III tournament by winning the NESCAC title on Sunday — other Maine college teams from University of Southern Maine, Colby, and Bowdoin are also joining the contests.
