About this event

The Falmouth Memorial Library will host a Camden Conference Community Event on Saturday November 21, at 2:00 p.m. The program will examine Maine’s current data center landscape and the challenges facing policymakers as they weigh potential benefits—including investment, tax revenue, jobs, and infrastructure improvements against concerns about energy consumption, water use, noise, and land use. The discussion will also look at the work of the Maine Data Center Advisory Council, the Department of Economic and Community Development, and the Public Utilities Commission. With the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence driving demand for data centers, the presentation will also explore how Mainers view AI and data centers, as well as the growing debate over the need for the U.S. to be competitive with China. How should policymakers balance local impacts with the national goal of maintaining American leadership in AI? Finally, we’ll look ahead at the emerging policy questions and challenges surrounding data centers at the national, state, and local levels and what Maine’s experience may tell us about the future.

Presenter Melanie Sachs of Freeport has represented her community for three terms in the Maine House of Representatives, ending in 2026. During her time in the Maine State Legislature, she served as the House Chair of the Energy, Utilities and Technology Committee, House Chair of the Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee, a member of the Tax Committee, and as an appointed member of the Building, Infrastructure and Housing Working Group on the Maine Climate Council. She also served on the Freeport Town Council for six years, and was elected chair for several terms.
