COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday, about 150 people played in the annual Swish-Out tournament at the University of Southern Maine, raising $40,000 for the Maine Children's Cancer Program (now in its 31st year and having raised over $800,000 overall).  FOX23

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Saturday at 4 p.m., the Coast Guard received a distress call from Maine fishing vessel 25 to Life off Nahant—where a snapped rope struck two crewmembers, and hospital officials later confirmed that 26-year-old Jaxson Marston died while the other was injured.  WGME

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Full Speed Ahead film festival will run from Tuesday through May 11 and show 16 train films, including The Darjeeling Limited, Strangers on a Train and Murder on the Orient Express, at venues across Maine— from Portland to Waterville. Nonprofit organizers aim to spark discussion on future passenger train service and support local independent theaters.  Portland Press Herald
  • A series of shows will take place this week, including Good Theater's reopening at Stevens Square with 'I'll Drink To That!', Public Theatre’s run of 'Now and Then,' and a performance by Grammy-nominated flutist Nathalie Joachim at Aura on Thursday. The week also brings the Fiddlehead Festival on Saturday at the University of Maine at Farmington parking lot and a 'Star Wars' concert on Sunday at Merrill Auditorium—ticket prices vary.  Portland Press Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the City Council will meet at 5:00 p.m. at City Hall to vote on a proposal to pause new theaters and performance halls with over 2,000 seats—an action that may freeze the Portland Music Hall application and prompt a review of city land use codes.  Portland Press Herald
  • The Coast Guard is planning to remove more than 100 navigation buoys from Maine waters to update systems that pre-date modern GPS—this includes about 40 in Penobscot Bay and 12 around Mount Desert Island, with public comment open until June 13.  FOX23

  • The Northeast Sports Card Expo kicked off Saturday and ran into Sunday in Portland, drawing collectors to view rare sports cards and memorabilia. The event featured 225 vendors (a record for Maine shows) and included prized items such as a unique Mickey Mantle card (highly valued by collectors).  WGME
  • The Northeast Sports Card Expo—Maine's biggest sports card and memorabilia show—kicked off Saturday in Portland and continued until Sunday. Collectors enjoyed rare finds as 225 vendors offered both new and vintage cards including an iconic Mickey Mantle card.  FOX23
