CULTURE NEWS

  • Maine’s only French-language film festival—Festival Champlain—will be held next week at the Portland Museum of Art to showcase films from around the world and celebrate French culture. Lisa Scali, the board president, said the event highlights a renewed focus on local art and language.  FOX23

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rain forecasted Tuesday night into Wednesday will bring about half an inch to most areas but will not ease the drought that has left many parts of Maine several inches short of normal—dry conditions increase wildfire risks and affect local farmers. Weather service experts advise extra caution as the week remains dry aside from this brief rainfall.  Portland Press Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows held a press conference on Monday to address security measures for absentee voting after a Newburgh woman reported receiving hundreds of blank ballots in an Amazon package—her office immediately launched an investigation as early in-person voting began.  WMTW
  • Maine voters have been able to vote in-person absentee since Oct. 6 for the Nov. 4 election—with the final day to request ballots on Oct. 30. The ballot includes two statewide questions—one on changes to election law requiring photo ID and another on a red flag law—plus local municipal issues and a Washington County bond vote.  WMTW

  • Babygirl Foundation built a book nook at Barbara Bush Children's Hospital to offer families supplies and a cozy space after Addison’s long stay in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. President Tammy Dube said the effort honors Addison and supports parents during hard times—an initiative that began when her family faced a long hospital visit.  FOX23
