As always, day-of volunteers to help make things run smoothly are appreciated!
Up North Orienteers will host a fun, family-friendly orienteering event Sunday, Nov. 8 at Lowell Preserve (47 Falmouth Rd, Windham). People can drop by between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to walk or run through the woods searching for bright orange flags placed among the trees, rocks and rivers.
Serious orienteers will have fun following their map and bushwhacking, while newcomers can stay mostly on trails to explore caves and waterfalls.
Volunteer instructors will be on site to help beginners learn the basics before they head out. Short courses make it possible to try multiple routes for those who arrive early, and participants can explore varied terrain at their own pace.
“It’s been more than a decade since Maine has hosted a public orienteering event. We want people of every age and ability to discover the joy of navigating the woods,” said Heather Steeves of Up North Orienteers. “Orienteering turns a hike into an adventure. It’s the perfect activity for families, trail runners, serious map readers, and anyone else seeking a weekend side quest.”
“Orienteering encourages outdoor exploration and helps people discover the natural places we work to protect,” said Emily Southard, Director of Development and Marketing for the Presumpscot Regional Land Trust. “Bringing this new activity to Windham Community Forest offers a new and exciting way for people to get outside, have fun, and build connections to our conserved lands.”
